Frequently Asked Questions

How can I prevent a chimney fire?

Be careful what you burn! Only burn proper, well-seasoned (dry) hardwood (deciduous trees). Softwood (evergreens) burn too quickly and can create products of incomplete combustion. Use softwood for kindling only. Don't burn garbage, cardboard, glossy paper, etc

How do I know if my chimney needs to be cleaned?

Venting issues can be caused by many problems like a nest, creosote buildup, and/or blockages. If the chimney does not seems to be drawing or venting properly it should be inspected. If the fireplace is in the basement, negative air pressure can cause it to not vent well.

Why is water coming into my house through the chimney or ceiling?

Water infiltration may be caused by a cracked chimney or drip cap, but most often happens because water is infiltrating through the step-flashing in the roof. Repairing flashings is an involved process. A detailed assessment of your particular needs should be carried out as soon as possible.
